This is the Annual International Competition for publication in Volume 17 of Direct Art Magazine, Fall/Winter 2010 issue. Direct Art is distributed in the US by COMAG Marketing Group, the distributors of Art News and Art in America, to bookstores throughout the US including Barnes and Nobles and Borders. The twenty awards include the covers of magazine, feature articles and full page displays. The competition is open to all artists working in any media.  Artist winners of the competition will, at no cost to the artist, have their work appear Volume 17 of the Direct Art Magazine.

DIRECT ART AWARDS: 
Grand Prize: Front Cover and six page feature display.
  Second Prize: Back Cover and four page feature display.  
Awards 3-4: Four page feature.
  Awards 5-6: Double page feature display.
  Awards 7-20: Single full page display.

ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to all artists, national and international, working in all media. Desotorow Gallery announces a call to artists for “Illumination,” an exhibition to be held Jan. 22-Jan. 27, 2010. “Illumination” will be a juried exhibition of works of art created with or about light.The juried exhibition “Illumination” is open to national and international artists of all levels. Entries to this call should either be constructed using light or explore light as subject matter. To be considered, an entry form, entry fee, artist statement and digital images of the artwork should be submitted to Desotorow Gallery by 5pm, Jan. 8, 2010. A $15 submission fee allows for the submission of up to 3 pieces of work. Artists will receive notification of the list of selected pieces through email on Jan. 11.

18th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition

The Eighteenth San Angelo National Ceramic Competition highlights a broad range of attitudes in the medium of clay from functional to sculptural work. The show is hosted and organized by the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts in close cooperation with Angelo State University, San Angelo, Texas.  This competition is open to all artists who are residents of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. All work, both functional and sculptural, must have been completed within the last two years. Works previously accepted into this competition are ineligible. Work may be entered by either digital images or 35 mm slides. Awards for the show are First place 2000.00, Second Place 1500.00, Third Place 1000.00 and 750.00 going to the Tile Prix Primo which is a special prize awarded by the Tile Heritage Foundation, in cooperation with the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. This award goes to the tile maker whose tile in the juror’s estimation best reflects the ceramic traditions of America. Exhibition dates for the show are April 16 – June 20, 2010. An Invited Artist will also have an exhibition of work and will lead a workshop.

In conjunction with the exhibition, several activities are planned. There will be a panel discussion concerning contemporary ceramics held at Angelo State University on April 16th at 1:30 p.m. The panel will include the Museum Director, the Invited Artist and the Juror. The Invited Artist, will lead a workshop at The Old Chicken Farm Art Center on Saturday, April 17th. Numerous other events of interest to artists will occur. Juror Robbert Flick is a photographer and Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Southern California.  Flick grew up in Amersfoort, Holland and studied at the University of British Columbia at Vancouver.  He received his M.F.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has exhibited work all over the world, with shows at LACMA, the Hammer Museum, and the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, SFMOMA in San Francisco, the National Museum of American Art and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., Deightor Hallen in Hamburg, Vancouver Art Gallery in Vancouver, and Min Gallery in Tokyo. Flick’s work is in a number of public collections as well. He has received a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts grant, a COLA (City of Los Angeles) individual artist grant, and a Getty Scholarship.

We seek an exceptional lens-based image maker whose art practice engages ongoing issues that surround the expansion of photographic imagery in the digital age. Applicants should have a thorough knowledge of photographic history and critical/media theory, and be committed to advancing the discourse as an educator and an artist.

Requirements:  MFA or terminal degree specializing in Photography or related field required. Two years college-level teaching experience beyond TA preferred. Strong record of professional activity/ demonstrated commitment to creative practice required. Interdisciplinary and cross-media interests are assets, since the School of Art is actively evolving in these directions. The ideal candidate will be able to provide intellectual leadership and vision in the development of forward-looking undergraduate and graduate programs.

Responsibilities include: developing curriculum that complements the school’s established studio and design programs, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, and mentoring students. Supervision of the chemical and digital facilities, in conjunction with other faculty, graduate students and staff, is a component of the position, as well as committee service to the School, College and University.

The UCLA Games Lab:  The role of the Games Lab situated in the Design | Media Arts Department at UCLA is to create a creative laboratory for team-based, interdisciplinary projects, particularly engaging students from the School of Arts and Architecture and the School of Theater, Film and Television. The lab is a cutting edge research tool employing high-end computers carrying complex graphics software both commercial and developed in-house, as well as specialized hardware, fabrication and electronics assembly and testing equipment that is utilized in the development of computer games.

The Games Lab Manager/Technical Director will support hardware and software development and implementation as well as project based research and development. The Manager/TD will oversee all operational services and support for the lab and for the faculty and student users; supervise and provide training; as well as define, design, maintain and expand the lab’s on-going dynamic knowledge base. The candidate should be technically knowledgeable and experienced in the fields of computer programming, system administration, gaming specific hardware & software workflow, and ideally have familiarity with the academic environment and experience in promoting and supporting a focused collaborative work process. An interest and enthusiasm for experimental game development is important. A Bachelors or Masters Degree in a related field is preferred (Computer Science, Media Arts, Animation, Engineering).

Red is symbolic, culturally, emotionally, politically, financially, and physically. The Center is looking for images that not only describe how Red looks, but describe what Red mean, how it feels, and who it describes.

Call for Public Art Proposals: City of Campbell, CA

The City of Campbell is excited to announce a request for qualifications from artists interested in creating, fabricating and installing public artwork for the Stojanovich Family Park Project. The Stojanovich Family Park is located at 316 Union Avenue in Campbell, California within a high density residential area. The property is currently vacant and has never been developed, having been part of a fruit processing and drying facility supporting the City’s orchard industry. This site is 1.32 acres in size (approximately 139’ x 408’).

The City of Campbell would like to introduce the public art component into the project at an early stage in order to maximize the opportunities and possibilities for unique and exciting public art. There is no predetermined location or format for the public art at the proposed park site. The project public art budget has been set at an amount not to exceed $25,000, inclusive of all Artist fees, conception, design, fabrication, transportation, prep work and installation costs and protection of the artwork during development. Interested artists are encouraged to submit qualifications/portfolios by January 22, 2010 by 5:00 PM.

Call for Applications: The Camargo Foundation Academic and Artistic Fellowships

The Camargo Foundation is now accepting applications from composers, writers, and visual artists pursuing specific projects. The interdisciplinary residency program is intended to give Fellows the time and space they need to realize their projects. The Foundation’s hillside campus overlooks the Mediterranean Sea in Cassis, France; it includes fully furnished apartments, a reference library, and art/music studios. Fellows are provided with self-catering accommodation on campus. A stipend of $1,500 is also available. Fellowships are from mid-September to mid-December, or mid-January to mid-April.

Qualified candidates from all countries and nationalities are encouraged to apply; proficiency in English is a requirement. The application deadline is January 12, 2010.

Michele J. Scott Open Access Printmaking Program at the ICA, opening January 2010

The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art is proud to announce the Michele J. Scott Open Access Printmaking Program at the ICA to be available in January 2010. The Michele J. Scott Open Access Program is available to artists familiar with the printmaking process to use as their own studio work space. Any artist who demonstrates an understanding of the medium is eligible to use the studio’s supplies, the press, and/or digital equipment (the certification program is offered free at the Print Center). This is especially helpful to graduates of local arts programs who no longer have access to university facilities, and artists who do not have the resources or studio space to own their own equipment.

Open access days at the Print Center are held on the first Sunday of the month from 10am – 4:30pm ($15 per hour). Upcoming open access days: Sunday, January 24 and March 7 (and the first Sunday of the month thereafter). Contact Fanny Retsek at the ICA print center for more information.

Root Division of San Francisco invites artists working in all genres to submit work for an exhibition called Security.

Curatorial statement:  Security means simply, the provision of safety.  Se-curity is related to the oldest menaing of curate: to care for souls.  Today the business of security is a global and corporate phenomenon.  The primary agenda is the production of fear; the ideal consumer is immobilized by dread.  Security, the exhibition, addresses this pivot between asylum and alarm.  We seek artists who tackle the charms or fetishes for security’s sell.  How we define security for our communities and the world, will determine how we get there and where we arrive. Artwork submitted for review (or work very similar in nature to that submitted) must be available for listed exhibition dates.

The Nadar Award for Students: call for entries

The Worldwide Photography Gala Awards ( WPGA) open a Juried competition for students and recent graduates of photography, fine art and design attending institutes, colleges, schools and universities worldwide: The Nadar Award for Students. Students from art-related schools and faculties such as architecture, as well as students from other careers, who are amateur photographers (i.e. members of photographic associations and photo clubs) may also qualify to submit images to The Nadar Award.

The first prize will be the attendance (including round trip from the country and city of residence, lodging, and tuition) to a Workshop organized by Santa Fe Photography Workshops, and will the winner images will be widely promoted internationally. Selected images will be exposed during 2010 in US and Europe. As in other contest organized by WPGA who partner with Save the Children, a portion of its revenue (entry fees and sales of works in exhibitions) will be donated to that humanitarian organization.

WPGA invites all  students (and recent graduates) working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought. Traditional, contemporary, avant-garde, creative and experimental works that include old and new processes, mixed techniques, and challenging personal, emotional or political statements are welcome to The Nadar Award.

CATEGORIES: The students and recent graduates who submit their images to The Nadar Award will compete separately in the following categories:
-  Portrait, People and Figure.
-  Documentary, Editorial and Current Affairs
- Digital enhanced and alternative processes
- Fine Art
- Citiscapes and Architecture
- Landscape and Nature
Any image can be submitted to one or more categories. There is no limit in the quantity of images to be submitted and in the date the images were taken.

JURORS:  Reid Callanan (Director, Santa Fe Photography Workshops) and Roy Flukinger (Senior Research Curator, Harry Ransom Center, The University of Texas in Austin).
DATES:  There will an Early Bird Deadline with discounted entry fees on December 20th and a Final Deadline on January 17th, 2010. Jurors’ selection will take place during the month of February, and the final announcement will be on March 11th 2010.
ENTRY FEES:  The entry fees for submitting images to The Nadar Award will be:  Before the early Bird deadline: for the first 3 images (the minimum of images to submit is 3) US$ 15; each additional image US$ 5…After the Early Bird deadline and until the final deadline: for the first 3 images US$ 25; each additional image US$ 7.  An image can be submitted to more than one category, counting as an additional image without discount.

AniMazing Spotlight! Call for animation film shorts

AniMazing Spotlight! is a “festival and feedback” competition exclusively for animated shorts, with an international panel of animation experts who review the shorts and select the nominations and winners, and also give every short entered their personal comments. Each quarter, AniMazing Spotlight! will present two awards for “Excellence in Animation.” The final eight quarterly winners will compete for “Best of Festival” at the Year-End Awards Ceremony and Festival. All nominations will be chosen by the international panel, and a special jury, chosen from the panel and prospective new panelists, will select the winners. Attendees of the festival’s nominations screenings will be able to select the Audience Favorite award.

Highlights of Qualifications:
-All Animated Shorts 12 minutes, or under, which haven’t won any top prizes (Oscars, Annies, Major Festival 1st prizes) are eligible, all formats, mixed formats, even works-in-progress.

-All entrants, who fill out the application, pay the entry fee and send their short, are qualified for all category awards, and receive comments from members of our international panel of experts.

-Year-End Festival will be at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.

Of Memory, Bone & Myth: a National Photography Exhibition

Of Memory, Bone & Myth: The first National Juried Photography Exhibition 2010 is organized by The University of North Dakota’s Department of Art & Design and seeks photographic imagery based on the interpretation of memory and myth. This exhibition also receives funding from the Colonel Eugene E. Myers Foundation that will result in a full color exhibition catalog to be produced with copies sent to all accepted participating artists. This exhibition is open to any photographic medium, including but not limited to historical processes, traditional silver printing, chromogenic printing and digital process. This juried exhibition is open to national artists of all levels (professional, emerging and students 18 years and over). All photographs must be framed no larger than 26” x 30”.

Deadline is Feb 10th, 2010.

Smithsonian Institution Fellowship Program 2010: Art History

The Smithsonian Institution encourages access to its collections, staff specialties, and reference resources by visiting scholars, scientists, and students. The Institution offers in-residence appointments for research and study using its facilities, and the advice and guidance of its staff members in fields that are actively pursued by the museums and research organizations of the Institution.

At present these fields include:

  • Anthropology, including archaeology,

Emerging Artist Competition: call for artists

The Artist Project, Toronto…APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE! The Artist Project Toronto invites submissions from emerging artists for the Untapped! Emerging Artist Competition.  Untapped is a juried competition in which 16 of the best up-and-coming artists will be awarded a free space in the 2010 show!  This is an excellent opportunity to participate in a professional-level art fair and to showcase your work to gallerists, collectors and art enthusiasts.

Winners Will:

  • Receive a free space in the Open Gallery section of the show (approximately 10 linear feet)
  • Connect with 10,000 visitors, gallerists & art buyers
  • Network with artists from across North America
  • Get promoted on:  The Artist Project website, show guide, press releases & other marketing materials

Who Can Apply?

  • Current students and recent graduates (no more than 3 years removed from post-secondary / graduate-level education)
  • Self-taught artists who have been practicing / exhibiting their art for less than 3 years
  • Winning artists must be able to travel to Toronto and be personally present for the duration of the show (March 4-7, 2010)
