The Artist Resume

Artist resumes: Everyone should have one and keep it updated periodically when you need to cough it up when requested. It is different than a resume when going for that job outside of the field of art. I found a Baltimore Art blog called BMOREART that has some great tips and guidelines for artist resumes: http://bmoreart.blogspot.com/2009/05/best-professional-practices-for-artists.html

Look at galleries for other artist’s resumes. Usually, they vary. The information at the BMOREART looks pretty good. The College Art Association has a spartan resume guideline as well: http://www.collegeart.org/guidelines/resume.html

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Bray is located three miles from downtown Helena, Montana, on the site of the former Western Clay Manufacturing Company. Set against the wooded foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the 26-acre former brickyard is internationally recognized as a gathering place for emerging and established ceramic artists. The Core Program Residencies: Artist and Critical Studies

The Core Program, based in Houston, Texas,  awards one- and two-year residencies to highly motivated, exceptional visual artists and art scholars who have completed their undergraduate or graduate training but have not yet fully developed a professional career. Established in 1982 within the Glassell School of Art, the teaching wing of Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts, the Core Program encourages intensive and innovative studio practice as well as the elaboration of an intellectual framework through which to understand that practice. Residents engage in ongoing dialogue with each other and with leading figures in art and criticism who are brought in as visitors.

Each artist-resident is given approximately 450 square feet of private studio space, 24-hour access to school facilities and equipment, and a $10,000 annual stipend.* In 1998, the program added critical studies residencies. These residencies also include a $10,000 annual stipend and access to facilities, including borrowing privileges at the museum’s Hirsch Library and the Fondren Library at nearby Rice University. The program runs on an academic calendar, from September through May. Toward the end of each year, the artist residents mount a group show in the school’s main gallery, and the critical studies residents prepare essays summarizing aspects of their independent research. These essays, as well as documentation of the resident artists’ work, are gathered in a published catalogue.

The Core Program attracts a diverse array of applicants from across the US and abroad. Residents are chosen by a jury of professional artists, art historians and critics based on quality of work. APPLICATION DEADLINE IS APRIL 1, 2010.

Show us creative imagery that interprets an aspect of world peace that is (one or more) inspirational, hopeful, challenging, thought provoking, striking, powerful, or parabolic.

Qualifications and Rules
Work must be submitted by the creator of the piece. Work must be ready to be hung/installed on a wall (i.e. it must be framed, mounted, etc.) and fit through a standard sized door. Work must lend itself to a family oriented dining environment.

Schedule

All images should be sent via email to “Zephronas@pacbell.net” with the subject line reading “World Peace.” Email must include applicant’s name, phone number, and email. Applicants selected for the exhibition will be notified on or by April 2nd via email and/or phone. Arrangements will be made for receiving the work. All original work must be submitted for installation by 8PM Friday April 9th to the arranged location. All work must be reclaimed Monday April 12th between 10am – 11pm. The artist voted crowd favorite will be notified by Friday, April 16th.

Incentives
Few things are better for an artist than exposure. This exhibition occurs during the San Jose State University International House’s biannual PCB fundraiser and is attended by a large international audience as well as several prestigious leaders in the bay area community. Yet another set of Lists

I guess I’m into lists lately. Someone sent me a link to a list of “100 Great blogs for Art Students” by Online College (thanks Danielle!) While perusing though it, I saw some of my favorites were posted on there. But then I was thinking in my own self-centered artist way of the interesting places I visit for art news, interesting articles and the like. Of course, one can look on the right hand side of this blog to see my favorite sites blogs, websites, museum sites/blogs and artist websites. So, while not 100, here goes my quasi mini version of some interesting and informative art sites:

The “I can learn something at these sites”…maybe:

American Suburb X: A great site for photography articles, videos and interviews. “American Suburb X is an ever-growing archive and fiercely edited look at photography’s past, present and ever-unfolding future.”

Mark Vallen’s Art for a Change blog: Events, theory, commentary. Always entertaining and enlightening, Mark has a lot to say!

Art Forum: The old standby.

Bay Area Art Quake: Great local reviews and news.

Conscientious: Jorg Colberg’s web-blog about fine art photography and more. Good topics.

Cultural Shifts: Culture, the arts, essays, opinions, interviews… you name it, they got it.

Daily Serving: Daily Serving was conceived as a central site for art lovers to visit daily to find resources and updates on happenings within the contemporary visual art. They bill themselves as “An international forum for the contemporary visual arts.”

Glaze 21: Free membership to get hundreds of free glaze recipes.

Iowa Arts Council, Grantwiting Tips: I like it…it’s a list…and its from Iowa: “A Place to Grow.”

New Art: An old favorite. “Notes on installation art, performance, theater, cinema, painting, sculpture, digital art and more…”

The Brooklyn Rail: “Critical perspectives on arts, politics and culture.”

The Scream: Art, photography, music, poetry, film, articles and my favorite area “The Strange & Bizarre.”

University of Wisconsin Art History Website: tons o links

X-TRA Online: Contemporary Art Quarterly. Always good stuff here.

What’s Happening? and What’s Out There?

Art Babble: Museums, videos, artist’s interview. Lotsa stuff.

Art Shift: “This collection of reviews, topical articles and artist’s profiles is where you want to be if you are an artist, art collector or art lover in San Jose and Silicon Valley. This is where you will find the most art news and discussion of exhibitions, art issues and controversy, and of course, artists.”

Fecal Face: Looking at their site is sometimes like opening the Cheesecake Factory Menu: overwhelming. But lots of good info, exhibitions, artist interviews and more…a lot more! “Fecal Face is a content-rich, comprehensive, multidisciplinary art and culture website supporting the art scene in San Francisco and beyond since 2000.”

Village Savant: “Guide to creative existence” …and they are local too!

Favorite Places for Listings:

College Art Association: Opportunities.

Visual Arts Alberta blog: Good source for listings.

San Francisco Artists Network: Call for Artists

California Arts Council: Artist calls

Cafe Call for Entry

Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts

Rhizome

Seattle Art Opportunities: Seattle’s Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs

Job Listings: art

College Art Association: job listings and careers

Academic Keys: “Academic Keys’ primary function is to list job openings for faculty and senior administration positions at colleges and universities.” Job listings for higher education.

The Chronicle for Higher Education: Great online news, topics, forums, events and job listings site

Art Job Online: Subscription based.

Museum Jobs: Around the world for museums, galleries, libraries, and archives.

American Association of Museums: American organization for museums, around since 1906!!

OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS:  Taste 2010: A Garden of Earthly Delights
Root Division of San Francisco invites artists working in all genres to submit work for an exhibition called Taste 2010: A Garden of Earthly Delights
Curatorial statement: TASTE is an annual exhibit about food & food-related ideas that focuses on a different theme each year. This year we are taking our inspiration from Hieronymus Bosch’s painting The Garden of Earthly Delights. Spring is a time for fantasies, fecundity, and a bounty born of the rain & earth. It carries with it a sense of celebration, illumination, and verdancy. Everything that has been waiting in the ground comes out and spills over. As in Bosch’s painting, there is a mystical force at work causing a co-mingling of the animal, vegetable, and human in nature. Eve has eaten of the apple – anything is possible. With the new decade comes the promise of more fruitful times, and this year’s TASTE event is serendipitously scheduled for the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. With this in mind, we are looking for work that embodies a generosity and sincerity of spirit, rather than dark irony or cynicism; the sweetness of fresh berries over the saccharin of hard candy; an abundance characterized by ripe lushness rather than decadence or frivolity.

On the evening of April 22nd, a fundraising event dedicated to the beauty of art and food, also titled TASTE 2010, will share space with this exhibit. Culinary delights will be prepared in the gallery by acclaimed local chefs and mixologists. Artists do not have to be present for this event but will be invited to attend. In addition to the fundraiser, an Artists’ Preview & Opening Reception will be held on Saturday, April 10th from 7-10 pm.

Eligibility requirements:
Artwork submitted for review (or work very similar in nature to that submitted) must be available for listed exhibition dates.
Artists from all areas will be reviewed, however, keep in mind that this exhibit and accompanying event emphasizes food and food-related themes in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Artists who are not from the SF Bay Area must be able to cover any costs incurred in getting the work to and from the gallery.
Exhibition dates: April 7-24, 2010
Curated by: Michelle Mansour and Jessica Wallen
Deadline for Submission Tuesday, February 16, 2010

What is a motion portrait?  Is there such a thing?  What distinguishes motion portraits from biographical films and documentaries?  Portraiture and self-portraiture have fascinating histories in painting, drawing, sculpture and photography, but what has happened to the form of the portrait in the digital age?  Are contemporary filmmakers, video artists, animators and programmers pushing the disciplines of the portrait and self-portrait into motion?

The Cornell Council for the Arts, Prudence Risley Residential College for the Creative and Performing Arts at Cornell University, and Cornell Cinema invite submissions of motion portraits and self-portraits for a curated screening.

Through this open call, we seek to uncover the full depth and range of contemporary portraiture and self-portraiture in time-based arts.  Broad interpretations of “portrait” and “self-portrait” are welcome.  Accepting all artworks which can be screened in video (including film, video, motion graphics, animation, programming, game interfaces, flip books, etc.)  Due to scheduling limitations, works under 5 minutes preferred. Exhibition of the curated show will be at Cornell Cinema in April 2010.

Curated by Darren Douglas Floyd, Artist-In-Residence, Film and Video, Cornell University, 2009-2010 (web.mac.com/humiliated) with the assistance of Cornell University students.

Deadline: All entries must be postmarked by March 15th, 2010.

There is no entry fee.

Please send submissions as .mov data files on DVD to:
